IRiS (Initiation to Research in Astronomy for...

IRiS (Initiation to Research in Astronomy for Schools) is a robotic telescope, remotely controllable and located at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (04). This project was initiated and financed by research laboratories in the sciences of the universe and in particle physics (OCEVU Laboratory of Excellence, Institut Pythéas, Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory, FOCUS Laboratory of Excellence, Paris Observatory), in partnership with the ministerial "Sciences at School" scheme, to enable pupils and students to discover the scientific approach in a quasi-professional environment.

IRiS is a telescope with a 50 cm primary mirror, a CCD camera and 8 spectral filters. It can be controlled using an online interface, accessible from any computer with a standard internet connection. IRiS is primarily dedicated to school audiences (secondary education, from junior high school to high school and also as part of liaison teaching between CM2 and 6ème), but is also used in the context of higher education (masters in astrophysics in Marseille, Grenoble, Toulouse, Paris) as well as for research (transits of exoplanets, gamma-ray bursts, monitoring of variable stars, stellar formation). http://iris.lam.fr
